I agree lighten up you guys I care more about the people and their struggles than some monkey or hyena. And do you know why we have domesticated Dogs and Cats today? Because at some point long ago this happened. Some people are way to PC and Liberal.

holy crap, can you people lighten up and MAYBE open up your minds to another culture?? to the people in these pictures, this is completely normal...
the egyptians and other ancient cultures kept animals like these as pets, so why is it so bad now??

I think these guys have the bad ass animals as protection or as a weapon. A pitbull would get it's ass eaten by these critters. So would anyone who got in the way of the master.
Lighten up. Nigeria is the asshole of the world.

I agree completely. These animals are not meant to be pets. Put them back where they belong. It is not our place to take animals out of their natural habitat and place mussels on them because they may "act like animals" Its terrible that people think that they can do whatever they want and they are interfering in nature because they think that it is cool or the thing to do at the time.

I've looked at all of the series, both the 2005 and 2007 portraits. I think they are stunning. Pieter Hugo has the touch of classic West African portraits, with a lovely surreal sense of color and composition; and a starkness that reaches out and knocks the breath out of your chest. He mentions in his article about these shots that he loves the contrast between wild and urban Africa, and I felt that right away. It also shows that two-way exchange of U.S. hip-hop culture, because these guys look they are trying to be Big Boi with his pits. Can anyone else feel this? Thanks for the PETA info, I never was impressed by their public agression, and it sounds like it echoes their private slaughter. Very unfortunate. Peace to everyone.

I cant believe this!! These people belong in the garden of eden and should not be laboring with such things. They were made to live in harmony with their creation. These animals draw them out and trick them into taking care of them. Things(people and animals) should only be where we say they belong. If something is not in place we should get upset and say how wrong it is while eating cheese burgers and buying products that in one way or another causes more harm to our fellow humans than that animal in the photo ever would. A human life is worth more than that of things we use for food. Humane treatment for all life but ethical intentions as consumers far outweighs any circus show. Get real. There are a lot more important things going on that you should focus your energy on. We all have pets. Its a reflection of how we view ourselves. "kill the white people, but buy my record first.." E.M.

As an artistic statement i believe these pictures display human nature. I don't see any difference from this then a elderly white woman holding a groomed poodle. This type of thing is encouraged by western culture.

Wtf you guys are just stupid.
This is not America were talking about its in fu*king Africa.
Completely different way of life. Who are you to decide that an animal should or shouldn't be domesticated? What are you "God"?
Anyways if they have a purpose behind all of this then why don't you just leave them alone. It is not that serious.
